What is Quartzite?

Quartzite is a hard, non-foliated metamorphic rock. It was originally pure quartz sandstone but is turned into quartzite through extreme heat and pressure. While quartz is considered an engineered stone, quartzite is a naturally occurring metamorphic rock originated from sandstone.

Quartzite is a fantastic option for countertops, vanities, bathrooms, backsplashes, wet bars, kitchen sinks, bathroom sinks, and many other design features. If you’re looking to remodel your current home, or you’re in the process of building your home, quartzite may be the right stone for you.

Quartzite Countertops

There are multiple benefits for homeowners who choose to install quartzite countertops. Because it is harder than granite and other popular stones, it’s a more durable option. Many slabs are also less porous than stones such as granite, making it stain and scratch resistant.

When compared to marble countertops, quartzite bears a close resemblance, making it a popular option for homeowners who love the classy, elegant look, but may be on a budget. Many quartzite slabs are stronger than marble, so etching and scratching are less of an issue. Although, some quartzite may be labeled as “soft,” and etching could be an issue, sealing your quartzite countertops will help to keep them looking new.

Quartzite Countertop Colors

Because it’s a natural stone, quartzite comes in a variety of colors, shades, and styles – but since it’s not manufactured, colors may be more limited than quartzite’s counterpart, quartz, which is an engineered stone.

Due to the process in which quartzite is formed, many of the colors are a cream, white, or beige shade. There are also shades of grey, black, brown, green, yellow, blue, and even red quartzite.

Caring for Quartzite Countertops

Quartzite is pretty low-maintenance, so it’s a good option for high-traffic areas such as the kitchen or bathroom. Quartzite counters can be wiped down daily with a damp, soft towel or sponge with a little pH balanced dish soap. Spills should be cleaned up immediately to avoid staining, even if your counters have been sealed.

Avoid using any harsh chemicals to clean your countertops because you risk stripping the sealant and causing damage to the actual stone. It can also make quartzite countertops appear duller. Although mostly scratch resistant, it’s better to use a soft towel or non-abrasive sponge to wipe your counters down.
