Grain Valley, Missouri Marble Countertops

Although marble looks expensive, it’s one of the most affordable natural stone options. It’s also durable because it’s heat resistant, scratch-resistant, and because it’s a soft stone, it’s possible to create more intricate designs and edges.

Marble Countertop Care

While marble countertops are naturally durable, they do require some maintenance. Protecting marble stone from chipping, staining, and etching will help keep them looking new. While sealing marble may help to repel stains, it doesn’t make marble stainproof. A few other things to remember when it comes to caring for your marble countertop:

  • Seal your marble countertops
  • Clean daily with soap and water
  • Avoid acidic cleaning solutions, lemon, ammonia, or other harsh chemicals
  • Always use a sturdy cutting board
  • Avoid setting extremely hot pans on the counter
  • Attack tough stains with a hydrogen peroxide and water solution

Marble Countertops Pros and Cons

Marble makes a bold statement in any room. It’s clean, timeless, natural, and elegant. But like all things, marble has a list of pros and cons.

  • A ton of color and style options
  • A classic look that will never go out of style
  • Cool temperature
  • Widely available
  • An affordable option
  • Long-lasting

  • Marble is a soft stone, so it is susceptible to stains
  • Acidic fruits and cleaners can damage marble
  • If not sealed properly, scratches and etching can be an issue
  • Susceptible to damage if something heavy or sharp falls on it

Marble Countertops Prices

Another pro about marble is that it’s diverse. Depending on the type of marble you choose, prices can vary considerably. The average marble cost per square-foot can run anywhere from $40 to $100 depending on the style of stone, thickness, color, installation, design and whether you choose to add extras such as a backsplash to match.

Types of Marble Countertops

There are hundreds of varieties of marble, each with its own unique look. Because marble is a natural stone, each cut has varying shades, veins, and tones – some glossy, others matte. Here are some of the most popular types of marble for countertops:

Carrara Marble

Carrara marble is typically white or can have a blue-grey tint. It characteristically has smoky-grey veins. Carrara is one of the most popular choices in homes and is also one of the most affordable. Although it’s white, Carrara is typically not a pure white. Each slab of Carrara marble is unique. Quarried in Italy, Carrara is a luxurious stone, often with a polished or honed finish.

Calcutta Marble

Calcutta marble is typically differentiated by its veining. Also, Calcutta is more of a pure white compared to other marble. The whiter the marble, usually the more expensive the slab. Also, when the veining lines up, the pricier it gets. Calcutta marble is also quarried in Italy and has distinct colors of white with dramatic gold or grey veins. Calcutta is available in both honed and polished finishes.

Statuario Marble

Statuario marble is quarried in Italy and has a more dramatic look compared to Carrara or Calcutta. Statuario has distinct grey and gold veins in bold patterns against a white background. It can also have both thick and thin veining. Statuario is considered one of the more precious marbles and therefore is one of the more expensive types. Most Statuario marble has a polished finished.

How to Clean Marble Countertops in Bathrooms

Marble countertops in bathrooms require some maintenance to keep them looking like new. Marble cleaner can be purchased at most grocery or home improvement stores, but if you’d like to save a little money, mixing gentle, non-abrasive dish soap with warm water works great for daily cleaning. Make sure you avoid harsh chemicals and acidic solutions such as lemon or vinegar. For stains, a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and a few drops of ammonia will work. For tougher stains, certain chemicals or pastes may be necessary. Always test the surface before using a chemical cleaner on your marble countertops.

How to Remove Water Stains from Marble Countertops

Because marble is a soft stone, water stains can occur, especially with hard water. Water spots are mineral deposits on the surface of the marble stone, so they are cleaned differently than an etch mark or a scratch, which would be an actual indention in the surface of the stone. Hard water stains can be removed with a marble cleaner and soft towel or by gently buffing the stain with grade #0000 steel wool. Make sure to dry the surface of the counter first and then buff in a circular motion over the stain until it’s gone.
